Canberra’s rental affordability crisis has worsened, according to a new analysis by Anglicare.
It comes off the back of recent data showing Canberra has the highest proportion of people on low income in rental stress, with the most expensive rents for a house in Australia.
The Leader of the Canberra Liberals Alistair Coe said many Canberrans doing it tough are now struggling even more to make ends meet.
“This is why the next ACT Government needs to establish an urgent Poverty Taskforce to report on the causes and symptoms of poverty in the ACT before the end of summer,” Mr Coe said.
“On almost every measure, the ACT is unaffordable. The high cost of rent, housing, petrol, utilities, car registration and more is putting significant pressure on household budgets.
“The Canberra Liberals want the ACT to be a place where all families can get ahead and focus on the things that matter to them.
“That’s why we’re committed to bringing down the cost of living and establishing a Poverty Taskforce to help more Canberrans get ahead,” Mr Coe said.
